Host Professor:Professor Dr. FENG GE
Group of Population Ecology for Global Change
State Key Laboratory of Integrated Management of Pest Insects and Rodents Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences Datun Road, Chayang, Beijing, 100101,

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

1. Chemical ecology of insect plant interactions:
(Rice pests, Cotton Pests, and vegetable pests).

2. Botanical and microbial control of insects:
(Rice pests, Cotton Pests, and vegetable pests and Mosquito Vectors (malarial vector (drinking water), filarial vector (sewage water) dengue vector (stored water) and Japanese encephalitis vector (water logged paddy fields)

3. Host plant selection of butterflies and biodiversity conservation:
(Papilionidae, Danaidae, & Pieridae) The research experience of Dr. K. MURUGAN during doctoral research programme and subsequent postdoctoral training necessarily involves diverse Aspects of insect-plant interactions with a particular emphasis on ecological and chemical basis of host plant selection and reproductive programming of insects. Dr. Murugan has also worked on the host plant biochemical influence on the feeding, growth and development of insects and subsequent impact on the parasitoid survival and parasitization efficiency (ecto/endo parasitoids) and to trace out the triptrophic interactions. Major attention was devoted to screen the plant products and microbial insecticides on the feeding toxicity, growth, development and reproduction of insect pests of agriculture, forestry, medical and veterinary importance. Dr. K. Murugan has also very much concentrated on the the synergistic activity of plant compounds (neem limonoids) with other microbial insecticides such nuclear polyhedrosis virus, Bacillus thuringiensis, entomo- pathogenic fungi and entompathogenic nematodes on the feeding, growth and reproduction for the successful control of crop insects. Of the all insects that transmit diseases, mosquitoes represent by far, the greatest menace. World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the mosquito “Public Enemy Number One” because mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission of various dreadful diseases (malaria, filariasis, dengue and Japanese encephalitis). Hence, Dr. Murugan has done on the effect of neem on the larvicidal, pupicidal, growth inhibitory and antiovipositional studies were conducted and neem products greatly increased the larvicidal and pupicidal properties of different kinds of mosquitoes. His recent investigations on the effect of plant products on the control of mosquito vectors at the paddy fields and subsequent impact on the rice pest is very novel and it needs further investigations.
